Happy New Year! Doesn’t it feel good to start a new year with a fresh perspective and renewed energy? This time of year, everyone is given a clean slate, a blank page, a new beginning. This can be your opportunity to start or do something spectacular.

Here are three ways to make 2019 great and take your caregiving to the next level.

1. Learn. Choose a caregiving or aging topic you’re interested in and learn more about it. Begin by searching online to find resources. For example, you may have clients with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease or arthritis.

Two helpful sites maintained by Home Instead Senior Care®are www.CaregiverStress.com andwww.HelpForAlzheimersFamilies.com. Both are rich with content about aging and dementia, respectively.

If learning more about Alzheimer’s and dementia is a goal of yours, you can become a Certified CAREGiver by participating in Home Instead’s Alzheimer’s and dementia training program. Talk with your general manager or owner to learn more and see when the next training opportunity is scheduled.

2. Connect. Building relationships is a key aspect of living a happy and healthy life. As a CAREGiver you have the opportunity to build and nurture relationships with your clients on a regular basis. But, are you doing the same with the Key Players and other CAREGivers in your office?

Cultivating these office relationships can allow you to meet more people and learn from others. A simple way to get started is by attending as many CAREGiver meetings and celebrations as you can. If you’ve not been able to make it to these events because you’re working, talk with your general manager to see what can be done to ensure you’re able to attend more of the meetings.

3. Share. It’s no secret you love what you do and it shows in the care you provide to your clients on a regular basis. You’re encouraged to share your caregiving story with others. If you have friends or family who’d make a great CAREGiver like you, share your story with them! Tell them what you love about caregiving and why you think he or she would make an awesome CAREGiver.

CAREGiver Spotlight: Rita Yeingst

This month, we’re featuring Rita Yeingst, Regional CAREGiver of the Year from Kurt and Karla Kay’s franchise in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Watch her story.

Rita is one of those people who gets along with everyone. Prior to Home Instead, she worked in pottery for 30 years and a variety of other fields and now has been a CAREGiver for about six years.

She’s the definition of selfless. No matter what’s going on in her own life, she always put other people’s needs before her own. She has a deep love for her clients and their stories. In fact, she battled cancer and underwent chemo, but she insisted on only taking a few days off because she knew her clients needed her.

The Key Players in her office call her “Sunshine” because she’s always cheerful. Rita is always doing special things like that for her clients. To her, nothing is more rewarding as a CAREGiver than seeing her clients smile because they get to live their final years at home knowing they have quality care.

Rita was in disbelief when she found out she was named CAREGiver of the Year for the Great Lakes region. She said, “I love my job. I really do. I like to go to people’s homes and hear their stories. I could just sit and hear their stories all day long.”
