In the wake of the #MeToo movement, more information and stories have been shared to help spread awareness that sexual violence can happen anywhere, at any time, to anyone. Nearly 1 in 5 women in the United States have experienced rape or attempted rape at some time in their lives, and 1 in 67 American men have experienced rape or attempted rape.
This year, Sexual Assault Awareness Month hopes to focus its attention on the prevention of sexual harassment, abuse and assault by promoting the importance of consent in relationships, whether sexual or otherwise. The #IAsk campaign aims to shed light on what consent means within these relationships. Consent is more than just asking if a person is OK with having sex—it is about listening to the other person, and accepting and understanding their answer without coercion or pressure against their wishes.
